Epilepsy Surgery
Epilepsy surgery should be considered for all patients whose seizures cannot be treated by anti-seizure medicines
There are seizures where epilepsy starts in localised part of brain known as focus
Tests carried out in the programme will show if you have a focus, and if it is amenable to a resection surgery- aiming for seizure freedom
Sometimes the focus is in a region of brain which is not safe to operate on, or it may be in multiple regions of brain, when it cannot be operated, when we may consider a palliative surgery or VNS (vagus nerve stimulation) as further options.
Sometimes, we may also find that epilepsy is primary generalised epilepsy, in which case, surgery may not be helpful and optimisation of medications with VNS may be planned.
In any case, it is important you got guidance from our Epilepsy experts for the best possible solution for your Epilepsy
